An advanced mediation course, with emphasis on family disputes. An advanced mediation course, with emphasis on family disputes. Topics will include the emotional and economic, as well as the legal, consequences of separation and divorce on adults and children; conflict resolution techniques in the family context and specific techniques such as communication and questioning techniques; ways to defuse unproductive emotions and anger; domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health considerations; and parenting arrangements, division of property and support issues.
Skills in these techniques will be developed through role plays, discussions, and exercises. Additional topics will include ethics and standards of professional responsibility for mediators, the relationship between mediators and attorneys, and agreement writing techniques.
This course meets the requirements for certification as a family mediator in Virginia. Limited to twenty students. Prerequisite: 722 General Mediation or 721 Alternative Dispute Resolution or 416 Family Law.
