This course will survey various social programs including income protection programs (e.g. Social Security disability and unemployment); programs to assure basic needs (e.g. Aid to Families with Dependent Children and housing); and programs for special groups (e.g. farmers and veterans). It will explore the substantive philosophy behind these programs and the basic decision-making strategies employed to attain these substantive goals. A paper discussing field research into the actual workings of a specific social program will be required. Satisfies the Writing Requirement. Because the course will involve some field research, enrollment will be limited to 25 students.
