This course examines the family law practice, with a primary focus on facets of the divorce process, including custody, support and property settlement issues, the role of attorneys and the court, and the psychodynamics of the participants in this often highly emotionally-charged setting. The course will apply family law concepts to various hypothetical client situations, in both traditional and non-traditional families, to enable the student to identify issues, counsel clients and navigate the process through the court system. Classes will address client conferences, ethical issues, and strategies, and include practical exercises, e.g., role-playing such as mock motion hearings, to enhance students’ interview, problem-solving, negotiation and litigation skills. Course limited to fifteen students. Prerequisite: Family Law.
