Graduate School Information
The field of exercise science has dramatically expanded over the last decade. This is due in part to the increasing awareness of the role that regular physical activity plays in health maintenance and disease prevention. Exercise science has its roots in several fields including, but not limited to, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemistry, medicine, nutrition, physical education, physics, physiology, and psychology. As such, exercise science is a true cross-disciplinary field of study. Graduates of Kinesiology programs have many different professional opportunities in such areas as physical therapy, physician assistant, occupational therapy, sports medicine, medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, sports administration, corporate wellness, hospital wellness, personal training, athletic training, research, teaching, and nutrition. Because of its diversity and rapid expansion in related fields, it is more difficult to quantify exact job placement for exercise science. There is no question, however, that the many exercise and sport science academic programs provide educational and professional opportunities. The most prominent professional organization for exercise science is the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) which offers certification programs, publishes educational and research materials, conducts seminars and professional symposia, and offers student membership and programs (http://www.acsm.org).
Allied Health Graduate Program Directory by Katch, Katch, and McArdle is another resource for information about physical therapy programs. While not as detailed as the APTA Directory, it may also be used by those interested in graduate programs in exercise science, physician assistant, and occupational therapy.
