Lyon G. Tyler Department of History Graduate Program

Placement

2007 grads

William & Mary's History Department is uniquely prepared to train graduate students for a wide range of careers, and we're very proud of our record in placing alumni in the sort of jobs they want. All doctoral students take a one-credit, semester-long teacher training course in addition to working as teaching assistants, and almost all teach their own course at least once before leaving the program. The History Department, moreover--in conjunction with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, the Center for Archaeological Research, the Earl Gregg Swem Library, and other local institutions--offers history graduate students apprenticeships in archaeology, historical editing, archives, vernacular architecture, and humanities computing. These apprenticeships, which are competitively awarded and are normally held during the year-long master's program, train students for a wide range of careers beyond the halls of academe. As you'll see from the list below, most of our recent PhDs are in tenure-track positions at the university level, but the alumni of the master's program have followed a wider range of pursuits. Many are teaching or working toward higher degrees (see the advice of one MA on teaching in a private school). However, you'll also see on the list a public historian, an editor, a fundraiser, a library computer specialist, a researcher for a lobbying firm, as well as curators, archivists, and archaeologists. To smooth the transition from the classroom to the career, the department offers brown bag sessions on "interviewing", "what goes on a cv [academic-speak for a resumé]," "careers in history outside the academy," "transforming the book into an article," "getting on a conference panel," and other related topics.
