Costs & Funding

In 2006-2007, tuition and general fees for full-time Arts & Sciences graduate students (those who register for nine semester hours of credit or more per semester) were $4,707 per semester for residents of Virginia, and $11,119 per semester for non-residents.

Financial aid is available to both master's and doctoral students in the form of stipends, internships, assistantships, apprenticeships, grants and student loans. (Foreign students are eligible for all forms of funding except student loans.) In addition to the apprenticeships and internships described elsewhere, the Department also helps to place students in paid internships at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and the U.S. Parks Service at Jamestown Island.

Support for terminal master's students varies and is limited to one year. Awards, which are made on the basis of individual academic performance and promise, range from partial tuition without stipend to full tuition plus a $4,000 stipend. Students admitted to the doctoral program are normally funded on an equal basis. Awards next year will cover tuition and pay a $14,000 stipend. Presuming that a doctoral student makes good progress in the program, financial support is generally available for five years, or four if the student has an MA from another university. Funding is available for a sixth year on a competitive basis. The History Department also awards grants for research and conference travel to current students on a competitive basis. See Grants and Prizes.
