Research Grants
The Student Research Grant Program
provides funding (up to $500) for undergraduates participating in research
in biology or related fields (broadly defined) during the academic year. In
particular, we hope to provide funds to students that will enable research
opportunities they might not otherwise be able to undertake. The research
is designed by the participant and a sponsoring faculty member and is
conducted at the College of William & Mary; it is
expected to eventually result in publication and/or presentation. Funding
decisions are made three times per year, at the beginning of the fall and
spring semesters and at the start of the summer term. Students participating in
the exchange program with Hampton University, Norfolk
State University, Virginia State University and Thomas Nelson Community
College are also
eligible to apply.
The number of recipients varies, and
ranges from 10 - 20 awardees per semester. Research topics have
included: spatial memory in birds, factors influencing the degradation of
fungicides in agricultural runoff, the effects of heat shock on C. elegans embryogenesis, detector
development for gene imaging, the mechanisms of nuclear import, and
developmental characterization of a novel GABA transporter in Xenopus laevis.
