Materials Available for Teachers

One of the goals of the outreach section of the grant is to provide continuing support to local area teachers, even after they have taken one of our update courses.  Toward this end we are supplying materials that were used in the update courses and that would be particularly useful in the classroom to promote inquiry-driven experimentation and learning.   The  stipulations for obtaining the material are:

  • Completion of one of the update courses.
  • Willingness to provide us with feedback.  We will request that you forward us a brief description of the exercise for which you used the materials and an assessment of its impact and success.  This could take the form of your lesson plan.  We will also ask for your responses to a brief survey for use in our annual report to the HHMI.

Materials are available for the following courses:

Endocrine Physiology

Bioinformatics and Molecular Biotechnology

Entomology

Microbiology

Field Botany

Integrative Biology/Physiology

Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

I"TAILORED REQUESTS"
We will be glad to furnish teachers with materials for specific experiments they would like to perform with the entire class or with selected students.

Materials are available to teachers who partcipated in the following courses and who would like to perform some of the experiments in their classrooms.

REQUESTS FOR EQUIPMENT
More expensive pieces of equipment such as electrophoresis equipment can be borrowed for use in classroom exercises.   We also are initiating a program of “Mini-Grants” to Purchase Equipment.  For those teachers that wish to use more costly molecular biology and biotechnology equipment on a more regular basis but for whom the cost is prohibitive, we offer a program  that allows teachers to write a “mini-grant” requesting the purchases of needed equipment.  The conditions are as follows:

  • Familiarity with how to use the materials.  This could be satisfied by completing one of the update courses, visiting the College and receiving instruction, or providing us with a brief description of previous training.
  • Willingness to provide us with feedback.  We will request that you forward us a brief description of the exercise for which you used the materials and an assessment of its impact and success.  This could take the form of your lesson plan.  We will also ask for your responses to a brief survey for use in our annual report to the HHMI.

HOW CAN THESE MATERIALS BE OBTAINED?
Please contact Margaret Saha at the College of William and Mary via e-mail (mssaha@wm.edu) or phone (221-2407) to request materials.   Depending upon what is needed, the materials can be picked up at the College (if a loan of some of the larger equipment is required) or sent via mail (if only the reagents or supplies are required).  We would be happy to provide a demonstration or training if requested. Teachers should also feel free to contact us if they have any questions regarding the use of these materials in the classroom. There is no cost for any of the materials, but please provide us with as much advance notice as possible.
