Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does confidentiality mean?

For those students age 18 and over we cannot discuss your care or your state of health with anyone (parents, friends, professors, etc.) without your written consent. The only exceptions are life threatening situations, or when required by law.

2. Where are you located?

We are located on Gooch Drive, south of Zable Football Stadium and the University Center.

3. Do I pay when I visit the Health Center?

Full-time students have paid the HEALTH FEE, as part of their tuition. This fee covers most routine professional medical services. It does not cover the cost of prescription drugs, laboratory tests, some supplies, allergy injections, immunizations, and summer health fees. We also charge a $5 co-pay for all physician, nurse practitioner, and physician assistant visits. For any of these additional costs, payment is expected on the day of service. YES, we take VISA, MasterCard, personal checks and CASH! Sorry, we do not accept the W&M Express card, nor do we send bills home to mom or dad. You can check out the Charges Sheet for more information on specific fees. Charges are subject to change without prior notice.

4. What about insurance?

We accept only the W&M sponsored insurance. We are too small to be able to accept or process claims for any insurance other than the W&M sponsored plan. We will provide you with a written receipt to submit to your insurance company. In addition, all laboratory costs from outside labs will be billed directly to the student. You will need to provide your insurance information directly to the lab personnel. Please call our business manager at 221-2189 for questions.

5. What do I do if I get sick in the middle of the night?

For NONEMERGENCY questions, call My-Nurse-Line at 1-866-458-4966...it is FREE OF CHARGE and open 24 hours a day.

In an EMERGENCY, call 911.

6. Why do you ask personal questions?

Your health history (i.e. allergies, last menstrual period, alcohol intake, safe sex issues, smoking, etc.) is pertinent to the caregiver for proper diagnosis and treatment reasons.

7. Why do you ask all women if they could be pregnant?

If there is any chance you may be pregnant, the Health Center staff needs to know in order to protect your unborn baby and yourself from medication and/or treatment that could adversely affect a pregnancy.

8. How do I give feedback?

There are several avenues for patients to provide feedback regarding health services. You may choose to speak to the staff member providing care; the director; the health educator or office manager. You also have the option of sending an email to the Student Health Center, telephoning the provider or director, putting your suggestions in the suggestion box located in the lobby, or submitting your comments online using our online feedback form.
