The Sadler Student Affairs Fund

Supporting W&M Students

During his more than 45 years at William and Mary, Sam Sadler has established a list of initiatives that help students at the College successfully develop critical skills for life. He calls his list “A Few of My Favorite Things.” Sam retired on July 1, but the W. Samuel Sadler Student Affairs Fund has been established to support a Few of Sam’s Favorite Things. Following are a few of the initiatives the fund will support:

Diversity Programs. Developing university-wide programs that engage all students and foster cultural inclusiveness and interaction is an important goal for Student Affairs. Diversity programs feature speakers, seminars and student-initiated activities that allow members of the campus community to learn about multicultural issues and cultures other than their own.

Leadership Development Program. To encourage the development of leadership skills and promote responsibility to students, the Student Affairs office needs to add a staff position dedicated to leadership. In addition, Student Affairs is working to add a variety of training and leadership development programs, a leadership resource center and additional opportunities for hands-on skill-building and learning.

Career Services. Raising expendable resources that support Career Services is an essential part of the William and Mary experience that will prepare our students for life after college. Expendable resources for Career Services will help with programming as well as ongoing maintenance of our new Career Center, to be constructed in 2010.

University Speaker Series. Student Affairs seeks to create a student-focused series that brings four to five speakers to campus each year. The series will engage the campus community around topics and themes of contemporary importance and provide opportunities for students to interact with speakers.

Concert Series. Student Affairs is working to enhance the cultural life of the campus community by bringing recognized performing artists to campus, and by providing students with classes in conjunction with each concert.

First Year Experience Program. The First Year Experience (FYE) exposes freshmen and transfer students to resources, challenges and experiences that encourage holistic development. We are seeking support of the FYE’s programs, a few of which include Freshman Residence Life, Career Exploration, Academic Intervention and Campus Involvement.
