Plumeri House

When legendary William and Mary librarian and avid gardener Earl Gregg Swem decided to build a home close to campus on Chandler Court, heThe Plumeri House christened it "Spadehaven," a haven for gardeners. The College purchased the home in 1963 as faculty housing. Today, the renovated Spadehaven, made possible by Joseph Plumeri '66, continues the College’s long history of hospitality as a home away from home for special members of the William and Mary family.

The historic significance of the Plumeri House has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, and its Chandler Court neighborhood has been designated a Historic District by the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission.

The Plumeri House has two distinctively appointed bedroom suites, a warm, inviting living room, a dining room that can accommodate 10 and a fully equipped kitchen. The Plumeri House includes a downstairs screened porch, which Swem christened "Spadehaven Beach," and an upstairs balcony off one bedroom that overlooks the house's beautiful enclosed gardens.

The interior is designed to give the feel of home. Like the house's Georgian-inspired architecture, the furnishings are stately and elegant, yet comfortable. The dining room's round table for 10 is appropriate for formal dining, meetings and entertaining. Artwork created by William and Mary students and faculty members adds to the warm ambience of the Plumeri House.
