Hornblende gabbro exposed near the Rapidan River, Madison County. Hornblende gabbros occur as dikes and sills that intrude Proterozoic basement rock and Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks in the eastern Blue Ridge province. Recent geochronologic studies suggest these hornblende gabbros may be 700 million years old.
