Fashion, Design, and Cultural Identity: The Ethics Behind the Aesthetics

Laura Novik is a fashion design and design management professor affiliated with the Pontificie Universidad Catolica de Chile, Inacap / Technology
University of Chile, Universidad del Pacífico, Universidad Mayor de Temuco and Universidad Católica de Temuco. She is also affiliated with ITACA, an
international research network focused on design and community development. She is the founder of an NGO called Raiz Diseno that focuses on
design and local development – and questions of fair trade, sustainability, and identity. Her design studio is called blink.d-sign She works continuously with
Mapuche artisans, local and government agencies, and designers in Argentina, Brasil, Colombia. Raíz Diseño, the non-governmental organization that
she co-founded, is affiliated with UNESCO’s Alliance for Cultural Diversity.

Andrews lecture hall on Saturday, October 6. The conference will begin with registration at 9am and conclude at 4:00pm.
Exhibitors will set up in the main hallway of Andrews. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival, co-sponsored by SEAC, will be held that evening in Andrews Lecture Hall from 7:00p.m. to 10:00p.m., with doors opening at 6:15pm.

The Virginia Chesapeake Climate Action Network is seeking a new Director and a Grassroots Community Organizer. Deadline for both positions September 15th.
The Virginia Campaign Director’s primary responsibility will be devising and managing Virginia clean energy and global warming campaigns. Among the Director’s many tasks, he/she will be responsible for training, expanding and organizing CCAN’s volunteer activist base in Virginia, expanding our partnerships, organizing chapters and affiliate groups, and helping lead them towards effective social and political action on global warming. Weekend and evening work is common, so flexibility on hours and days is essential.
The Virginia Grassroots Organizer’s primary responsibility will be to maintain and build CCAN chapters and CCAN supporters, develop grassroots leaders, and embrace other organizations in an effort to build a stronger coalition in the fight to stop global warming. The organizer will also assist the State Director as needed to achieve statewide goals. Weekend and evening work is common, so flexibility on hours and days is essential.
Salary for both positions is commensurate with experience. Benefits include healthcare and a very generous vacation package. Position is located in downtown Richmond, VA. The job starts in late September, early October.
