TASTE TRADITION
Locally Grown, Locally Eaten
Food and farming play a key role in maintaining our quality of life, rural landscape and health. To showcase local agriculture, a public Farm Resource Guide is being compiled to encourage and raise awareness of local agriculture in James City County, New Kent County and Charles City County.
This guide is being put together by the Virginia Cooperative Extension offices of James City County and New Kent County with the assistance of student volunteers from the Environmental Studies Department of the College of William and Mary. When complete the farm fresh guide will be available to consumers interested in locating local fruits and vegetables, pick your own farms, pumpkins, eggs, herbs, honey, meats, wineries, horses and boarding, hay, Christmas trees, greenhouse and nursery operations, farmers’ markets, farm stands and more.
Benefits of buying locally grown food include:
•Increased freshness, nutrition and taste
•Supporting local agriculture benefits the rural land base, ecology and economy
•Ensures food security through biodiversity
•Helps reduce global warming by reducing transportation
•Supports the local sustainable movement and helps build strong communities
All farms interested in being included in this guide who have not already sent in their forms should contact Mary Mills at the New Kent Extension Office (804) 966-9645 to request a Farm Resource Guide survey form.
