The Sunset Beach Resort serves as the hotel for our Birding programs on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Please note, this hotel is no longer affiliated with the Best Western chain.
The hotel is located ¼ mile north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on US Route 13, at the tip of the Eastern Shore. Situated on 44 acres of land, the hotel has a private beach, picnic areas, gazebos, playgrounds and an outdoor pool. It is superbly located for our programs, adjacent to the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge and close to Kiptopeke State Park. Visit the hotel web site: http://www.sunsetbeachresortva.com/
Getting to the Sunset Beach Resort
The Eastern Shore of Virginia, part of the "Delmarva" peninsula, is a relatively rural, undeveloped area without public transportation. To get to the Sunset Beach Resort, you must either drive or fly and rent a car/take a taxi. You can fly into Norfolk International Airport (closest) or Newport News/Williamsburg airport.
Elderhostel is not able to provide transportation from the airport. You can secure transportation at your own expense, by either renting a car or by contacting Airport Express Service (757-857-3991), which will provide shuttle service from the Norfolk airport to Cape Charles at a cost of $85.00 for one person ($10.00 each additional person in the car) plus the toll for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel ($12.00 one-way). The travel time from the Norfolk airport is approximately 45 minutes. From the Newport News/Williamsburg airport allow approximately one and a half hours travel time-- this airport does not have a shuttle so you will have to take a taxi.
