The English Inn of Charlottesville will be your home away from home while you are Elderhosteling with us. All classes will be held at the hotel in comfortable conference rooms.
Getting to the English Inn...
The English Inn is centrally located in Charlottesville and is one mile from the University of Virginia. Please note, we strongly recommend that you rent a car if you are not driving your own vehicle to the program. This will give you the greatest flexibility during free time, as well as facilitating transport to and from the airport.
... By Car (Driving Directions):
- From Richmond and points east: Take I-64 West toward Charlottesville. Take the first Charlottesville exit, Exit #124 Charlottesville/Shadwell/Route 250. At the end of the exit ramp, turn RIGHT onto Route 250. Go through eight traffic lights. Turn LEFT onto Emmet Street. Cross over two lanes of traffic and take your first LEFT. The English Inn is on Morton Drive, behind Bodo's Bagels.
- From Washington, D.C. and points north: Take I-66 West to Gainesville. Exit onto Route 29 South toward Charlottesville. Go approximately 70 miles to the outskirts of Charlottesville. Take the first LEFT after passing under the Route 250 Bypass. The English Inn is on Morton Drive, behind Bodo's Bagels.
- From Roanoke and points south: From I-81, take I-64 East. Take I-64 East to Exit 118B, which puts you on the Route 250 Bypass. Follow the Bypass to the Emmet Street exit (about 4 miles). Cross over two lanes of traffic and take the first LEFT. The English Inn is on Morton Drive, behind Bodo's Bagels.
... By Air: Charlottesville is served by the small Charlottesville/Albemarle Airport, offering service on Delta Connection, United Express, and US Airways Express. Connections can be made from Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York-La Guardia, Washington-Dulles, Cincinnati, and Atlanta. The English Inn offers complimentary shuttle service from the airport to the hotel between 7:30 am and 8:00 pm, however you must contact the hotel to alert them of your arrival time. In addition, Avis, Hertz, and National rental car companies have locations in the terminal (see driving directions above). The Richmond Airport, which hosts most major airline carriers, is located approximately one and a half hours to the southeast. Transportation from the airport is available via taxi or rental car (see driving directions above). Check with your travel agent for the best flight options.
... By Bus: Greyhound services Charlottesville, with rides available from Washington, D.C. Also, Charlottesville Transit Service operates local bus service and stops directly in front of the English Inn.
... By Train: Amtrak offers service to Charlottesville along routes originating in New Orleans and Atlanta to the south; Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York to the north; and Chicago to the west.
Elderhostel Registration at the English Inn
Opening activities begin in the lobby at 3:30 pm with Elderhostel registration. If you arrive at the hotel before 3:30 pm on the opening day, you may check with the front desk to determine if your room is available. The hotel check-in time is 2:00 pm; check-out time is 12:00 pm.
To accommodate your travel plans, the English Inn can usually provide lodging before and/or after your program. The hotel offers a discounted Elderhostel rate of $69.00 plus tax. This rate is not always available, especially on University of Virginia football weekends. To make reservations, call the English Inn directly at 1-800-786-5400. Be sure to let them know you are with William and Mary Elderhostel to receive the special rate. Meals are not included. If the hotel is sold out, give us a call at (757) 221-3649 and we will be happy to offer other suggestions. Payment for the extra nights must be paid directly to the hotel.
The English Inn has a Fitness Center with an exercise bike and weights to keep you in shape during your stay. The indoor pool and sauna is a great way to unwind after field trips and we hope you have time to take advantage of it during your free time. For our real fitness buffs, you can use ACAC, a fitness center about 10 blocks from the hotel. It's free if you bring your room key!
