CREATION STORIES AND MYTHS

This website displays a 5th and 6th grade study of creation myths and legends from their own cultures which have been passed down from generation to generation. The students gathered information to show how countries have different creation stories and myths. This is a collaborative project between a classroom in San Francisco and a classroom in Amsterdam.

EARTH DAY GROCERIES PROJECT

This project is one of the oldest and largest educational projects on the Internet. The project's goal is to encourage classrooms around the world to decorate paper grocery bags with environmental messages and distribute these to stores for Earth Day. There is a link on the site to view pictures of students making the bags and also reports on the project from various classrooms in many different countries.

Exploration of the highways and back roads of the United States was the focus of this website. A teacher traveled throughout the US for one year and documented her journey in an electronic journal. The journal is divided into sections by state. Each entry contains links to the sites this teacher visited. There is a wealth of information about geography. The teacher also documented the trip of "Flat Teddy" who went along with her. There is a wonderful index that provides links to learning about locations, history, and geography. Some examples include: The Alamo, Sitting Bull, Lake Erie , Oregon Trail, Native Americans, etc.

Students engage in a language arts activity that will be published on a web site. Students may work individually, in small groups or as a class. There is a showcase section highlighting students work and also a winter activities section. The students included a timeline of Harriet Tubman's life, character sketches, poems about her, and even a quiz to take. There are other important links connecting to history about Harriet Tubman such as photos of her home and maps of routes taken on the Underground Railroad. There are also links to books about Harriet Tubman and other related websites on the Internet.

As a response to the reading, students wrote a class poem about the book's theme or about a character in the book. Any poetry form could be used. There links to poetry resources and winter books. The result is a software package targeted at five different Saskatchewan Curriculum units. These units include: health, math, social studies, science, language arts, and researcher. This site has wonderful information and links about keypals, list servs, and webquests. There are numerous examples of webquests of many different subjects.

An online collaborative project on animals and/or plants that become active in the springtime. A website to learn more about migration, hibernation, and protective coloration. Students engaged in multi-disciplinary activities with a science emphasis that were published on this website. The project coincided with Earth Day. There are links to interactive activities about spring, earth day and spring theme units, sites on specific animals like bunnies, birds, etc., and a showcase of student work from this project. After identifying signs of the new spring season, students illustrated and wrote a descriptive poem or paragraph ending with "That's What Happens When It's Spring!". Inspiration for this project came from the book "That's What Happens When It's Spring!" by Elaine Good. There are links to websites about spring and significant books covering this topic.
