Economic Development

About the Office

The Office includes an Associate Vice President, and Assistant Director, the Director of the Technology and Business Center, an Office Manager, Undergraduate Student Interns, and a Graduate Student in Public Policy.

The Associate Vice President of Economic Development reports to the President through the Vice President for Public Affairs.  We coordinate closely with the Provost, other William and Mary Vice Presidents, and the Deans of all our schools -- Arts and Sciences, Business, Law, Education, and Marine Science -- to identify collaborative opportunities.

We have very close relationships with the Vice Provost for Research and the Director of the Technology Transfer Office, and we work as a team in helping to make it easier for companies to gain access to applied research and streamline technology transfer processes.  We are very interested in helping young technology companies expand, particularly those that involve our faculty or can benefit from their research.

The Office is currently located on main campus in Corner House at 402 Jamestown Road.  In early 2008 the Office will be moving to a new building in New Town.  New Town is a 300-acre mixed-use community just to the west of the main campus.  Our new offices will be on Discovery Park Boulevard.  We will be co-located with the William and Mary Research Institute, two high-tech classrooms and the area workforce development coordinator of Thomas Nelson Community College, and James City County's Economic Development Office

Our Technology and Business Center actively seeks connections with technology and knowledge-based companies.

The Office of Economic Development has been particularly active in initiatives in bioinformatics, aging and geriatric health, sensors, entrepreneurship, education, and marine science.  The Office facilitates meetings of the VIMS-Industry Partnership Committee.  We have also supported the development of a new William and Mary Real Estate Foundation.

The Office has the leadership role in developing and implementing targeted projects designed to help the state, our region and Greater Williamsburg achieve their economic development goals.  Current projects in addition to continuing work in the local area include projects dealing with water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, the development of a sensors cluster in Hampton Roads, and the support of the City of Portsmouth's strategic planning to become a World Class Maritime Center

In short, the Office of Economic Development serves as a catalyst to support the efforts of our faculty who want to work with industry, other universities, non-profit organizations, and government on projects with economic development potential.

We are eager to work with you!
