VIMS-Industry Partnership
With the support and assistance of the Commonwealth Secretary of Commerce and Trade, William and Mary established the VIMS-Industry Partnership Committee in December 2003 to advise the Director of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on the development of long-term partnerships with industry and steps to improve collaborative research and technology transfer. In 2008 the Committee included some 20 VIMS participants, 9 representatives from the main William and Mary campus, over 30 industry participants from 19 companies, the Gloucester County Director of Economic Development, the Commonwealth Secretary of Commerce and Trade, Patrick Gottschalk, and representatives from the Hampton Roads Research Partnership and the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance. Industry participants included representatives from Exxon-Mobil, Northrop Grumman Newport News, SAIC, Luna Innovation, INCOGEN, Alion Science, Innovative Wireless Technologies, Marine Sonic, Netarus, Oceana Sensor, Pressure Systems, Prizm Advanced Communications, Tellus Applied Science, Werner Anderson, and others.
One major thrust of the collaboration has been the deployment of observation platforms in the Chesapeake Bay, equipped with physical and biochemical sensors linked to sophisticated models through real time data processing. Some of the industry partners, for example, have subcontracts on major grants to VIMS from the Office of Naval Research to test deployment of observation platforms equipped with cutting-edge sensors. VIMS is making substantial advances in anti-body sensor development. The probes that are under development are superior to current alternatives in portability, sensitivity, time, and cost. VIMS is identifying the antibodies associated with specific types of contaminants. Sensors are then used to measure the reation to the monoclonal antibodies. The extent of the reation indicates whether or not a substance is present. VIMS has a competitive advantage in this area because of its understanding of how animals make high-affinity antibodies.
