James B. Murray Jr.

ear Friends,

You may have heard about the successful resolution of the Wren Cross controversy (see story at http://www.wm.edu/news/index.php?id=7456). The President's and Board's action followed the unanimous recommendation of a Presidential Commission tasked with resolving the controversy. As a member of that Commission, I can report to you that our members earnestly hope and believe that this resolution will be acceptable to those who were so concerned. Our expedited action reflected the need felt by many, including the Rector and President, to put this episode to rest.

I know that the Commission's hope is also shared by many, many donors who care deeply about the College. You may have seen the news regarding a donor who has decided to revoke a $12-million pledge to the College as a result of last fall's change in practice regarding the Wren Cross. President Nichol has said that this is a setback for the College and, ultimately, its students. But the President also noted that "the College continues to thrive, with applications and contributions above where they were a year ago."

As Chair of the Campaign for William and Mary, I wanted to update everyone on this news and its impact on the College. Certainly, losing any commitment is discouraging news, but I am buoyed by the fact that thus far more than 58,300 alumni, parents and friends have participated in the Campaign for William and Mary. Meanwhile, there have been less than a dozen significant changes in gift plans as a result of the recent controversy. Many, many generous individuals have given, and will continue to give, to the Campaign because--put simply--they believe in William and Mary's students and faculty. They believe, as I do, that the College's 300-year history of educating great young minds is worthy of our continued trust and support.

When it comes right down to it, the Campaign for William and Mary is fueling the essential work of the College. Each day, students learn more about themselves and their world, tackling new ideas with the enthusiasm of youth. Professors demand the best from their students, inspiring and mentoring a new generation of leaders while making discoveries of their own. And they are able to do so because of the generosity of so many alumni and friends.

Please be assured that, as we approach June 30, 2007, we are working harder than ever to ensure the success of the Campaign for William and Mary. Our students, our faculty and our College deserve no less.

Cordially,

James B. Murray Jr. J.D. '74, LL.D. '00
