
The First Year Experience
Desired Outcomes:The goal of the FYE is to expose William and Mary students to resources, challenges, and experiences that support and encourage holistic development throughout their first year. It is intended that students will experience the enjoyment of learning and living at William and Mary and will increase their potential for success and satisfaction throughout their lives.
I. Students will feel welcomed as participants in the William and Mary Community.
- Students will be introduced to the traditions and culture of the college.
- Students will develop a sense of belonging and will feel invited to participate in College activities.
- Students will appreciate the diversity of the William and Mary community through activities and interactions designed to strengthen a sense of community.
II. Students will adjust to the academic challenges of higher education.
- Students will understand and begin to personalize the opportunities of liberal learning.
- Students will interact with faculty and administrators to facilitate adjustment to higher education and to the William and Mary standards, regulations, and policies that govern academic activities.
- Students will recognize their academic strengths and deficiencies and adapt by developing skills and using college resources to improve their ability to excel academically.
III. Students will be informed of and benefit from cultural, social, recreational, and residential opportunities at William & Mary.
- Students will develop and practice effective interpersonal skills.
- Students will develop their roles and demonstrate respect and care for one another in the residential community.
- Students will enhance personal growth and development by choosing to participate in activities, programs, and opportunities on the campus and in the community.
IV. Students will develop personal responsibility.
- Students will understand and abide by regulations and policies that govern student behavior.
- Students will develop an understanding of themselves, including their values, interests, and abilities, so that they may refine their skills and talents.
- Students will begin to set realistic academic, life, and career goals and to develop their potential.
- Students will learn strategies to assist them in making mature and responsible choices when faced with issues such as substance and alcohol abuse, personal health and safety, and sexuality.
- Students will develop healthy and effective techniques to manage the challenges of the first year.
- Students will take responsibility for their learning, decision-making, and use of available College resources.
- Students will understand, respect, and participate in the residential policy of self- determination.
- Students will form a sense of personal commitment to their communities through the development of leadership and service roles and skills.
- Students will demonstrate respectful behavior toward all people regardless of sex, race, color, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.
