Mission and Goals

The William and Mary Dance Program (located in Adair Hall) welcomes students at all levels of experience.   Many study dance for the first time at William and Mary while others build on previous training. Students are able to enter classes at a variety of levels through the Dance Placement Evaluation offered during Fall Orientation.  The curriculum includes a spectrum of courses in composition, technique, history and performance with extensive opportunities in both student and faculty choreographic research. Students may choose to minor in dance, create an Interdisciplinary Studies major which incorporates dance, or study dance on an elective basis. Many performance events originate in the Dance Program including the annual Orchesis concerts, the Dance Minors Concert, Group Choreography showings and Dance Composition showings.

Dance training provides preparation for graduate work and future careers in fields such as performance, choreography, education, dance criticism, dance production and movement therapies. Alumni of the Dance Program have found the skills developed through dance studies are an asset in careers both inside and outside of the dance field.  Alumni of the program often stay in touch during Homecoming events and are loyal contributors to the Roby-Sherman dance scholarship fund which helps current students pursue summer studies in dance.

The faculty are active dance professionals, dedicated to providing the best possible learning experience for students at William and Mary. These professors choreograph, perform, and present workshops in a variety of settings. Their work is presented on-campus and through professional venues such as Dance Place (Washington, D.C.), the Cunningham Studio (New York City) and the Choreographers Showcase (Norfolk, VA).  Guest artists come to the campus each year to perform and conduct master classes, giving students the opportunity to become acquainted with a variety of aesthetic approaches to technique and choreography.
