Welcome to the Orchesis website!

Orchesis is the performance company of the Dance Program at the College of William and Mary. It has presented high quality performances since 1941 and seeks to bring innovative and exciting concerts of student and faculty choreography to the community. Orchesis provides an opportunity for students to develop their performing skills, participate in the choreographic process, and contribute to concert production and company leadership. We encourage you to explore the links on this site in order to learn more!

Company Auditions are held each Fall during the first week of classes and are open to all students.  Dancers who are accepted into the company enroll in Performance Ensemble (Danc 321, 322).

An Evening of Dance

Orchesis choreographers and performers study modern technique and choreography in preparation for An Evening of Dance, presented each Spring at Phi Beta Kappa Hall.  Rehearsals for this concert begin in November and continue through March.  Choreographers are chosen on the basis of experience, interest, and course work completed in dance composition. They work closely with the faculty advisors through regularly scheduled critique sessions.  Choreographers begin work early in the year and are responsible for choreographing movement, selecting sound (or collaborating with a composer), creating the costumes, and teaching their movement to the dancers.  Once on stage, they also work closely with the lighting designer for their piece.

DANCEVENT

The Fall concert (DANCEVENT) presents faculty works performed by faculty, students, and guest artists.  These rehearsals take place in September and October. This concert is also presented in Phi Beta Kappa Hall, the home of William and Mary Theatre and an aesthetically stimulating environment for dance.
