On Thursday July 17, Lattice conference attendees are invited to tour historic Jamestown. Please sign up when you register for the conference. Because tours, tickets and other logistics must be arranged in advance, we may not be able to accommodate last minute requests to join the tour. There is no additional charge for this excursion.
The tour will stop at two locations:
1. Historic Jamestowne
Founded by Captain James Smith in 1607, Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States. Today the site is jointly administered by Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and the National Park Service. The Jamestown Rediscovery Project, begun in 1994, has located over 90% percent of the original triangular fort. Visitors can view the site of the fort, the 17th century church tower, the site of the 17th century town as well as ongoing archaeological excavations. Many of the million and a half recovered artifacts to date are also on display.
2. Jamestown Settlement
Through galleries exhibits, film and living history recreations, the Settlement tells the story of the people who founded Jamestown and of the Virginia Indians they encountered. At the Settlement you can board replicas of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia, explore life-size reconstructions of the colonists’ fort and a Powhatan Indian village, and interact with costumed historical interpreters.
- A boxed lunch will be provided.
- There will be a lot of walking.
- Comfortable shoes, hats, sun screen and insect repellant are highly recommended.
- The buses will depart no later than 12:30 and return by about 5:30pm.
Be sure to sign up when you register for Lattice 2008. If you have already registered and wish to go on the excursion, please e-mail our office HERE.
