Chemistry Department

Resources and Facilities

Rogers Hall (named for former W&M professor and founder of MIT, William Barton Rogers) is home to the Chemistry Department. Rogers Hall, built in 1975, provides modern facilities for the study of chemistry. Additional research labs are located in McGlothlin-Street Hall, opened in 1995. Students also have the opportunity to perform research at NASA-Langley and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Construction has begun on the Integrated Science Center, which will house the Chemistry and Biology Departments beginning in 2008.

There are twelve faculty research labs located in Rogers Hall, and additional laboratories in McGlothlin-Street Hall. Most research labs are equipped with fume hoods, standard laboratory equipment, chemical and solvent storage, computing equipment and private desk space for students.

  • Three instrument rooms, equipped with modern instrumentation (see listing below)
  • A glass-blowing facility
  • A computer lab for chemistry majors
  • A complete machine shop facility maintained by physics
  • The Chemistry Library, housed in Rogers Hall, with more than 3,500 monographs and subscription of more than 90 chemical journals, most of which are available on-line to students and faculty.
nmr imageThe department maintains an excellent up to date collection of instrumentation required for teaching and research. Highlights include:
  • A 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer
  • A single crystal X-ray diffractometer
  • A Nd:YAG laser
  • Two research-grade gas chromatographs
  • Three research-grade liquid chromatographs
  • A gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer
  • Flame and furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer
  • Fluorescence, UV/VIS, and Fourier transform IR spectrophotometers
  • A thermogravimetric analyzer
  • Instrumentation for polymer characterization, including a differential scanning calorimeter, a thermomechanical analyzer, a cone calorimeter, and a rheometer
  • A number of instruments contained within faculty research labs for their specific needs
  • Lower-division labs equipped with digital balances, gas chromatographs, pH meters, spectrophotometers, rotoevaporators, and wireless network laptop computer
