2008 May Seminars Program - Call for Proposals

The Committee on Honors and Interdisciplinary Studies (CHIS) is pleased to announce the competition for Summer 2008 Charles Center May Seminars. The Committee encourages proposals for projects in all of the fields in the Arts and Sciences.

Proposals are due to the Charles Center by Friday, April 19, 2008.

This program is designed to support collaborations and seminars of 2 to about 10 faculty for specific curriculum development or teaching improvement objectives. This year the Committee particularly encourages proposals designed to develop courses or other curricular structures that include undergraduate research, or inquiry-based learning. However, the Committee also welcomes projects that do not have this emphasis.

You may apply for funding EITHER if you already know who the other seminar participants will be OR if you would like the seminar topic advertised to attract additional participants.

Notes

1. All full- or part-time faculty with a contract for a teaching position at William and Mary after the summer of the grant are eligible to apply for Charles Center May Seminars.

2. While it has been customary for faculty seminars under this program to take place in May (hence, "May Seminars"), this is not a requirement of the program. Seminars may be scheduled at any time that is convenient for participants.

3. No individual projects will be funded this year and the Committee will not consider "research projects" - for example, projects that would be eligible for consideration under the College's summer research grant program.

4. Please contact your departmental IT liaison if you are proposing a project that involves educational technology. Liaisons should be involved in the process as early as possible in order to make sure that technical elements of the project are achievable.

Budgets

All Charles Center May Seminar stipends are standardized at $500 per person/per week. For instance, participants in a two-week seminar will each receive $1,000. Each seminar proposal may include a request for funds for books, films, supplies, photocopying, etc., up to a total of $50 per person. Larger sums may be requested in extraordinary cases.

Please refer to the Principles and Guidelines for more information.
