Roy R. Charles Center
Community of Scholars
Description of the Program
The "Community of Scholars Fund" is designed to encourage intellectual interaction between faculty and students outside of the classroom. Possibilities include funds for book or film discussion groups, field trips to lectures, museums, performances, laboratories, or field sites, including travel expenses and/or meals associated with these activities. While this fund may be used for extra-curricular activities associated with courses, it is not intended as a subsidy for required assignments or course projects. Its primary goal is to stimulate and subsidize intellectual exchange between faculty and students in extra-curricular or co-curricular settings.
NOTE: The Charles Center will fund transportation costs for class trips that take advantage of the facilities of William and Mary's Washington Office.
Application Guidelines
1. Both faculty (or staff) and students may apply for this funding. The only requirement is that both faculty (or staff) and students must take part in the activity for which funds are sought. (The Dean of Undergraduate Studies administers a similar fund that supports student-only projects.)
2. There is no deadline for applications, but since appropriate proposals will be funded on a first-come-first-served basis, you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
3. To apply, please submit a brief (no longer than one-page) description and budget to Joel Schwartz (jxschw@wm.edu), in the Charles Center. This proposal, which may be sent by email, should include:
a. a description of the activity itself, as well as information about who the participants will be; and
b. a brief budget.
