Guiding Principles for Proposals Under This Initiative

The Committee encourages proposals that will augment the capacity of departments and programs to teach with research or inquiry.

(1) Research and inquiry will be understood broadly to include the perspectives and practices of all departments and programs at the College. For instance, they will be defined with at least as much breadth as they are currently defined in the faculty merit evaluation process.

(2) The focus of initiatives under this program will be on student learning. Where appropriate, we wish to encourage new curricular structures that result in both research outputs (e.g., student or faculty-student presentations and publications) AND high quality inquiry-based learning experiences for our students. However, the latter - student learning - is the primary focus of this initiative.

(3) Proposals should include an articulated strategy for sustaining the initiatives into the future. The committee will not fund projects that appear to have only a one-time impact.

(4) Proposals must include a strategy for assessing the success of new courses or projects, and for making adjustments in light of assessment findings.
