Types of Jobs Available

Teaching English as a Second Language - Teachers of English as a second language work abroad for six months and typically up to two years instructing both students and adults on conversational English. Usually no prior teaching experience is required. All academic majors are acceptable. Programs may require a TEFL/TESL or equivalent certificate to teach English abroad.Teaching in Overseas School Operated by the Department of Defense - The Department of Defense operates approximately 160 schools overseas in 13 different countries. These schools provide a kindergarten through 12th grade education for children of American military and Department of Defense employees. Teacher applicants are required to be U.S. citizens, certified teachers, and have at least one year of current teaching experience.

Teaching in American and International Schools Overseas - There are a host of international schools that are not operated by the United States government. These schools are primarily American or use an English-language based curriculum. The students and teaching staff of these schools are comprised mostly of American and British students, as well as students from the host country. Teacher applicants must have a Bachelor's degree and at least two years of current, successful teaching experience. In some cases the teaching experience requirement may be waived. This is especially true of certified teachers in areas of mathematics, sciences and technology.

As with the private school teacher search, there are placement organizations that make referrals to schools abroad seeking teachers. However, many require a fee and do not guarantee placement, so think hard about how serious you are about pursuing this goal. Many United States universities offer Master's degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. A professional with a Master's degree in addition to classroom teaching experience will be prepared to develop curriculum, administer programs, and write materials. In general, Master's degrees in TESOL are most appropriate for those who have had TESL/TEFL experience and/or want to teach mainly in Canada and the United States.
