Technology
A connected campus for your connected life.
There’s just something inherently cool about stretching out on the soft grass in the Sunken Garden and uploading your physics homework while upgrading your tan.
As one of Intel’s 50 “Most Unwired” college campuses, William & Mary provides free wireless high-speed Internet access in nearly every corner of campus, inside and out. In addition to wireless access, all residence hall rooms come with wired Ethernet jacks for that extra burst of speed.
The newly renovated and expanded Earl Gregg Swem Library is a technological marvel. You can find information using Swem’s vast collection of online databases and e-journals or borrow laptops and iPods preloaded with audio books, music and movies. You can make your own digital copies of Civil War diaries or eighteenth-century letters in the Special Collections Research Center, or you can use the high-powered graphics workstations in the Interactive Graphics Lab to develop your own science visualization project. Did we mention you could IM the reference staff?
Visit Swem Library’s incredible new Media Center to create original music and movies, work on class projects and personal portfolios, or record yourself making a presentation or doing student teaching. Nine cutting-edge digital editing suites have powerful Mac desktops and laptops, cinema displays, electronic keyboards, and enough audio and video editing software to satisfy amateurs and pros. Students can also check out digital video cameras, sound and lighting kits, still digital cameras, digital mixers and more.
To best take advantage of our campus-wide network, the College requires all incoming freshmen to own a laptop computer. To help students purchase these laptops, William & Mary offers special pricing for both Dell and Apple laptops. Students can use financial aid money toward the purchase and since the school works exclusively with Dell and Apple, we can offer students highly competitive prices on the most powerful notebooks on the market.
W&M was one of the earliest adopters of the Blackboard e-learning system. Most professors use Blackboard to post syllabi, readings and assignments. And many have tapped the system’s incredible potential for online class discussions and virtual collaboration on projects.
Every W&M student also has a personalized myWM site where they can access webmail, Blackboard, class schedules, course descriptions, upcoming campus events and more. The Student Information Network is another excellent source for swapping used textbooks, buying and selling dorm accessories, and finding a co-pilot for a road trip.
