Joseph J. Plumeri II

Class of '66

Mr. Plumeri received his B.A. from the College of William and Mary in 1966 and studied law at New York University Law School.  He has a business track record marked by success after success and is a nationally renowned leader in civic organizations.  In October of 2000, he was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Willis Group Holdings, one of the world’s largest global insurance brokers. Since joining Willis he and his colleagues have achieved remarkable results injecting passion and energy into a previously-undynamic company. 

Prior to joining Willis, Mr. Plumeri enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career at Citigroup and its predecessor companies.  Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Plumeri led the integration of the consumer businesses at Citigroup and Travelers Group, serving as Chief Executive Officer of Citibank North America.  From the start of his career in the brokerage business, he progressed rapidly into management positions, including President and Managing Partner of Shearson in 1990 and President of the merged Smith Barney Shearson in 1993.  In 1994, he was promoted to Vice Chairman of Travelers Group and to the position of Chairman and CEO of Primerica Financial Services. 

Mr. Plumeri is a member of the William and Mary School of Business Advisory Board, an Emeritus Trustee of the Endowment Association and a former Director of the Alumni Society.  In 1996 he was awarded the Alumni Medallion by the Society of the Alumni and in 2003 he was awarded the William and Mary School of Business Medallion.  Since 1984, he has sponsored the William and Mary/Plumeri Pro-Am Golf Tournament to provide a continuing endowment.  He serves as a board member and advisor to many organizations, including Commerce Bank, The United Negro College Fund, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters.  In 1991 he was inducted into The Italian-American Hall of Fame, and has twice been named “Speaker of the Year” by the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School of Business. 

Mr. Plumeri was appointed to the Board of Visitors in 2000; he currently serves as Chair of the Committee on Development and Alumni Affairs and is a member of the Executive Committee and the Committee on Financial Affairs.  He is a former Chair of the Committee on Athletics.
