Undergraduate Research

There are many ways to get involved in undergraduate research (for advice on how, see the Handbook for Biology Majors in 'Undergraduate Curriculum').  In addition to undergraduate funding from faculty research grants, on-campus fellowships, and individual awards from many sources, the College has funding for a number of larger grants in various areas of biology.

In the fall in 1998, 2002, and 2006, the College of William and Mary was awarded multi-year $1.6 million grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for the advancement of undergraduate education and outreach in biological sciences and other scientific disciplines as they relate to biology. This funding has expanded undergraduate research opportunities, led to new and enhanced course offerings, and provided resources for teachers and pre-college students. Click here to learn more.

2006 marks the fourth year of an interdisciplinary summer internship program to study watersheds at the College of William and Mary. Funding is from the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Each year we select 10 undergraduates from across the country to participate in student research projects mentored by faculty in environmental geology, biology, sociology and economics. The cohort of students works with William and Mary faculty mentors to determine the impacts of changing watershed land use in scientific and socio-economic contexts. Click here to learn more.

William and Mary has received $647,000 from the National Science Foundation to initiate a formal BioMath initiative. This centers on both a mathematical and biological understanding of how habitat quality effects the long-term stability of animal populations. But these ideas are expandable to any area in which math, biology, and ecology overlap with each other. Many of the current projects are based on local bird populations, and we also have students working on invertebrate, reptile, and mammal systems. Funding is available for undergraduate projects, including semester and summer grants. Click here to learn more.
