Writing at William & Mary

charter

The College of William and Mary values good writing as a reflection of clear thinking and as a tool for lifelong learning. As such, it is both primary and essential to the goals of a liberal education.  Writing enhances learning, thus the William and Mary faculty are committed to promoting writing and the teaching of writing within all academic disciplines.

Every student at the College must take COLL 150, a first-year course with a strong emphasis on writing. Once a student declares a major, another course designated as satisfying that major's writing requirement must be completed before graduation.
