About the Writing and Communication Center

Mission

Students who come to W&M participate in a rigorous liberal arts curriculum that cultivates their critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. The W&M Writing and Communication Center (WCC) supports student progress with programming, resources, and one-on-one support to help them become better writers and communicators.

History

The WCC was established in 1987 as the Writing Resources Center, its mission to help students become better writers. In 1994, the center expanded to support students working on oral communication skills. After 22 years in Tucker Hall, the center relocated to Swem Library in 2009.  At the end of 2023, the WRC became the Writing and Communication Center. Today, the WCC remains in Swem, at the physical and intellectual center of campus.

Certification

In December 2018, the Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) "enthusiastically recommended that the Writing Resources Center at W&M receive SWCA Certification." This achievement was acknowledged at the February 2019 SWCA Annual Conference. Certification is valid for five years.
