Internships
Students can get academic credit for internships in either the fall or spring semester, or over the summer. On this page you will find information about, and links to, organizations where W&M students have interned in the past. If you are interested in doing an internship, make sure you file the Internship Application Form (pdf) with both your Women's Studies adviser and the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies before you begin your internship, ideally during registration for the semester in which you wish to do the internship. Funds are available to support spring break and summer internships through the Carol Woody Real World Internship Award. The deadline to apply for this award is usually in January or February, so make sure you apply early.
Community based internships through Women's Studies provide opportunities to gain invaluable information and a fresh perspective on your academic work, an also help you develop expertise and personal contacts within a workplace that you select, to match your own interests and educational needs. An internship will also increase community and global awareness while at the same time strengthening ties with local and national agencies, meeting both women's needs and the policies of W&M. Opportunities include working with organizations offering services and advocacy to sexual assault survivors, survivors of domestic violence, women seeking contraceptive and other forms of health care, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people, and women with substance abuse issues; and with national feminist advocacy organizations.
