For 2014, VSF will have available the show In Haste, Laura Keene - the story of America's first female theatre producer (and noted Shakespearean actress), whose company became most famous for their engagement of Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre on April 14, 1865 where they (and Miss Keene particularly) became part of American history during the assassination of President Lincoln. Prior to that tragic event though, Miss Keene had already changed American theatrical history by breaking down the barriers that had kept women from the male dominated world of the entertainment business. Her highly successful company had played the major theatrical venues around the country and was headed out to another such tour immediately after that fateful night at Ford’s. Tamara Johnson, familiar to Shakespeare Festival patrons for her roles in Romeo & Juliet, The Winter's Tale, Comedy of Errors and most recently as Queen Gertrude in Hamlet plays Miss Keene (a role she has also played on film) in this tour. 30, 45, and 60 minute versions of the show are available as well as a question and answer session with Miss Keene following the performance.
In Haste, Laura Keene played at the Picollo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC in May/June 2012 and at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC in July, 2013.
