In addition to your academic advisors, advisors from offices across campus are available to work with you and support you. Advisors can help you do more than decide which courses to take; they can assist you in taking advantage of all that William & Mary has to offer, both inside and outside the classroom. All our advisors serve an integral role in shaping undergraduates’ experiences so they discover opportunities that are personally and professionally satisfying.
Every new student entering William & Mary is assigned a faculty advisor, referred to as a “pre-major advisor." You will work with your pre-major advisor from orientation until you are ready to declare a major.
A major advisor is a faculty member in the department or program where you wish to major who will help you plan course loads that will fulfill all curricular and major requirements while meeting your interests and goal.
If your undergraduate career at William and Mary is just the first step towards a career that involves a graduate or professional school, you may wish to speak with a pre-professional advisor in addition to your pre-major and major advisors.
Professional and Peer Advisors
The Peer Advising Program is a student group that assists admitted freshman and transfer students in their academic transition to The College of William and Mary. All new students are connected with upper level students who serve as peer advisors. The peer advisors operate with the direction of the Office of Academic Advising to enhance the advising process for new students.
The Office of Academic Advising is located on the first floor of the Earl Gregg Swem Library, Room 169. Professional advisors in The Office of Academic Advising work to cultivate the mentoring relationships between W&M faculty and pre-major undergraduates that are essential for helping students develop academic and life-long learning skills. The professional advisor provides expertise and knowledge in working with faculty, administrators, and undergraduate students to foster self-directed learning and achievement.
