Advising is an ongoing process in which student and advisor collaborate and build a partnership based on mutual respect and shared responsibilities. Student and advisor interaction empowers the student to better identify values, goals, and preferences and to formulate an academic plan based on informed decisions. The advising partnership supports the student in enhancing the value of a liberal arts education, skill development, and life-long learning.

Advisor Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance about the value and components of a liberal arts education;
  • Support students in creating a curricular and co-curricular plan to meet education objectives and achieve life-long learning skills;
  • Foster a mentoring relationship; 
  • Assist students in evaluation of their academic progress and goal attainment;
  • Help students learn about academic requirements, policies, and procedures;
  • Maintain confidentiality to the extent outlined in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA);
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to academic advising.
Student Responsibilities
  • Communicate goals, values, skills, and concerns to the advisor in a respectful and sincere manner;
  • Schedule, keep, and be prepared for appointments with advisor;
  • Monitor your own academic progress and requirements;
  • Be knowledgeable of academic policies, procedures, and degree requirements;
  • Discuss educational challenges and achievements with the advisor;
  • Being aware of and utilizing appropriate campus and community resources to support educational goals and quality of life.
