Expectations

Advising is an ongoing process in which student and advisor collaborate and build a partnership based on mutual respect and shared responsibilities. Student and advisor interaction empowers the student to better identify values, goals, and preferences and to formulate an academic plan based on informed decisions. The advising partnership supports the student in enhancing the value of a liberal arts education, skill development, and life-long learning.

Advisor Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance about the value and components of a liberal arts education;
  • Support students in creating a curricular and co-curricular plan to meet education objectives and achieve life-long learning skills;
  • Foster a mentoring relationship; 
  • Assist students in evaluation of their academic progress and goal attainment;
  • Help students learn about academic requirements, policies, and procedures;
  • Maintain confidentiality to the extent outlined in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA);
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to academic advising.
Student Responsibilities
  • Schedule, keep, and be prepared for appointments with your advisor;
  • Monitor your own academic progress on DegreeWorks at the beginning and end of each semester;
  • Know academic policies, procedures, and degree requirements;
  • Discuss educational challenges and achievements with your advisor;
  • Being aware of and use appropriate campus and community resources to support your educational goals and quality of life;
  • Communicate goals, values, skills, and concerns to your advisor in a respectful and sincere manner.
