Academic Advising: Faculty Advisory Board

The Faculty Advisory Board consists of full-time faculty members who represent a cross-section of the Arts & Sciences departments and academic programs, as well as professional schools. Board members serve for the term of one academic year and may be reappointed annually. The goal of the advisory board is to enhance communication and a sense of community throughout the advising network. It meets monthly to discuss, design, and organize:

Communication enhancements (e.g., developing the peer mentor student advising program, improving the web page, developing a newsletter and upgrading links with the professional schools and units on campus that have a relationship with academic advising, such as the Dean of Students Office)

Community-building programs for advisors and advisees (such as organizing meetings, seminars, workshops, brown bag lunches and social gatherings and developing evaluation systems to monitor and ensure quality control)

Functions of the Liaisons

Specific duties of members include the following:

Responders. Act as the first responder to the emailed questions of incoming students during the period between the time they decide to attend The College of William & Mary (May) and Orientation (August).

Trouble-shooters. Act as the first person to be contacted by members of the liaison's academic units during registration and at other times.

Recruiters. Explain the advising system to faculty members within their academic units and encouraging them to join the cohort of academic advisors.

Program developers. Meet periodically to brainstorm, set up programs for advisors, and participate in the process of building a community of faculty who are committed to the concept of quality faculty student interaction.

Liaisons. Serve as a link in the advising communication chain between the Office of Academic Advising, schools, departments and programs, faculty advisors, academic advising peer mentors and freshman, sophomore and transfer advisees.
