Dance Electives and GER Information
Dance classes may be taken as electives toward the 120-credit degree requirement and to fulfill General Education Requirements.
General Education Requirements which can be satisfied with Dance courses:
GER 5 (Literature and History of the Arts) may be satisfied by taking Danc 220 or 230.
GER 6 (Creative and Performing Arts) may be satisfied by taking Danc 111, 211, 212, 261, 262, or 264. All technique courses at the 200 level or above require faculty permission to enroll. For new students with dance training, a Placement Evaluation is offered during Fall Orientation. Students will be assigned to the technique level for which they are qualified on the basis of previous background and demonstrated technical ability. Those students who place at the 300-level or above will receive exemption (no credit) for GER 6.
The following Dance courses do not require instructor permission to enroll:
Lecture courses:
Danc 150 - Freshman Seminar
Danc 220 - History of Modern Dance
Danc 230 - History of American Vernacular Dance
Studio courses:
Danc 111 -- Modern I
Please Note: Although students may take as many credits as they wish of dance technique and Performance Ensemble (Dance 111, 211, 212, 261, 262, 264, 311, 312, 321, 322, 411, 412), a maximum of 14 credits may be applied toward the 120 credits required for a degree for those not minoring in Dance. (A maximum of 16 credits is allowed for Dance Minors.) This limit does not include other Dance Program courses such as dance history, freshman seminars, composition, practicum, independent projects, Alexander Technique, etc.
