Tribute to Carol Sherman and Shirley Roby

On October 26, 2002, we gathered in the Adair Dance studio to celebrate 61 years of Orchesis at William and Mary and to thank Shirley Roby and Carol Sherman for their marvelous contributions to the Dance Program over their 36 years at the College. A wide array of alumni from 1960 through 2002 -- representing all decades! -- sent their good wishes from afar or were present to celebrate with "the ladies" and visit with each other. Joan Gavaler '85 introduced Maggie Kneip '77, Lynn Dillon '75, and Joyce Koons Field '90, who spoke about their experiences in the Dance Program and presented Carol and Shirley each with a gift.

The Roby-Sherman Dance fund was created in 2000 in honor of Carol and Shirley.  The Roby-Sherman Dance Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have shown outstanding dedication to the Dance Program and special ability in their dance work.  The first scholarship was awarded in 2005.
