For Students with Previous Dance Training
Many students with previous training continue their dance studies at William and Mary. The Dance Program offers a spectrum of courses in composition, technique, history and performance with extensive opportunities in both student and faculty choreographic research. Students may choose to minor in Dance, create an Interdisciplinary Studies major which incorporates dance or study dance on an elective basis. Please contact a faculty member if you have questions.
A dance audition is not required for admission to the College of William and Mary Dance Program. Prospective students who feel their level of previous dance experience would allow them to contribute to Dance Program performance and choreography activities have the option of submitting a dance performance video or DVD with their application. The video/DVD must be accompanied by a Dance Evaluation Cover Sheet [PDF]. Submitted materials become property of the College and will not be returned. Video/DVD evaluations are used by the Admissions Office only - they are not used to place students in classes.
New students with previous dance training should attend one of the Dance Placement Evaluation sessions to obtain permission for intermediate and advanced technique classes.
This evaluation is a means for the dance faculty to assess each student's previous experience and to make a recommendation for an appropriate technique course. The evaluation is not given second semester, so if you believe you may want to study dance sometime during the upcoming school year, it is important to take the Placement Evaluation during Fall Orientation.
Please note: Dance history courses, freshman seminars and Modern I technique courses do not require instructor permission to enroll.
