Jenny Thomas, University College London, Title of Talk: "Neutrinos have mass, so now what? The Next Steps in Experimental Neutrino" Physics.
Full Description
Jenny Thomas, University College London
Abstract: The Standard Model codified the idea of the
massless neutrino in 1967,
and ever since, experiments have challenged
that idea. Oscillation experiments establish that the neutrino must
have mass, but can not directly measure the value of that mass.
Experiments looking for neutrinoless double beta decay can potentially
determine the absolute mass of the neutrino, and would provide
additional insight into the nature of that elusive particle. In this
colloquium I will outline the state of play in the neutrino field,
starting with some recent results from the MINOS experiment. Looking to
the future, I will
discuss results from the NEMO-III neutrinoless
double beta decay experiment, and examine the prospects of the future
SuperNEMO experiment.
Everyone is invited
