A Letter from our Director

December 6, 2011

Dear Monroe Scholar Parents:

We had a great turnout this year for our Monroe Scholar Family Reception, which we hold each year on the Saturday of Family Weekend.  I enjoyed the opportunity to chat with many of you and I did my best to recruit some younger brothers and sisters to come to William and Mary.  Please put September 22, 2012, on your calendar right now and plan to attend this event next fall.

We have been spending some time this fall designing a new Monroe Scholars site that will include a parents' page/portal for Monroe Scholar Director Joel Schwartzfamilies.  We plan to update information about the program on a rolling basis, including events, research and internship opportunities, deadlines, and profiles and accomplishments of current and graduated Scholars.  Please visit this site and send us your suggestions for features that you would like to see us add in the future.  Be sure to fill out and submit the Parents' Contact Information form so that I will have your email address for future notices.

You will see a story on the site about James Long, who graduated from W&M in 2003 and who has become one of the world's leading authorities on elections in emerging democracies.  He has monitored and studied elections in some of the most challenging countries in the world, including Afghanistan and Uganda.  He got his start conducting research abroad as a Monroe Scholar, and with the help of the Charles Center, he was a successful applicant for a Fulbright Scholarship to continue his research after graduation.  This is a great example of the amazing doors that the research opportunities that we provide Monroe Scholars can open up. On the new site you will find a resources tab that will take you to more information about our support for students applying for Fulbright Scholarships and other national and international prestigious awards.

We continue to look for funds to support more research and conference travel for Scholars.  I hope that you will consider making a tax deductible gift to the program, either by following the Support the Charles Center link on our new site or by sending us a check in the enclosed envelope.

Have a great holiday season.

Best wishes,

Joel Schwartz
