"Greetings from Tolyatti, Russia!
Yesterday marked the one-month anniversary of my arrival in Russia, and I wanted to take a moment to say hello! I am happy to report that things are going quite well over here in the other hemisphere. I am working at Tolyatti State University, teaching classes in English language, as well as American history, politics, arts, and culture. I will also be continuing work on my documentary film (which currently still features all of you!)...I'm laying the ground work now and hope to begin interviews in the next month or so.
I am incredibly grateful to the community I have found myself in over here....everybody has been so friendly and welcoming, and so generous in spending time with me that there hasn't been a dull moment yet! Highlights so far have included hiking in the Zhiguli mountains, a cruise along the beautiful Volga river, and a day-trip to the neighboring city of Samara. Though Samara has its beautiful parts, I actually prefer Tolyatti. Despite being a highly industrial and Soviet-style city, its districts have a very pleasant neighborhood vibe about them" (updated in September 2009).

Otherwise, I am really enjoying Georgetown and it was definitely a good decision to come here. I have met some very interesting people, starting from a former ambassador to Russia to president Kwashnievski. The workload is heavy, and taking five classes uses up most of my time. I think I will only take four next semester. On some occasions, I only get a few hours a sleep a night, but grad school is still very rewarding" (Fall 2008).

I made great friends here at the Institute, there are a lot of Russians here too. So I took charge of the "We Speak Russian" Club on-campus. People here are as excited about the Russian language and culture as in W&M. So many students are already fluent or/and have lived in Russia. But most students actually come from Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbadjan, Georgia! Anyway, we already had an event - Bonfire on Pebble Beach and it went really well" (fall 2008).

2008 in Pyatigorsk, in the Caucuses. I really enjoyed my time there, but it made me realize how much I rely on American conveniences! Living in Pyatigorsk was also very different from my study abroad experience in St. Petersburg with William and Mary- we were much more isolated and had to rely on our Russian in more every-day ways. We lived in the dorm and went to classes at the university, with the ultimate goal of passing the TORFL in June (which I'm happy to say we
both did!). Since returning from Pyatigorsk, I've been getting my masters at Boston College. I'm a graduate assistant here, and one of my favorite opportunities was substituting for a few Russian classes. I'll finish this program in the spring, and next fall I plan to enter a Ph D program with a focus on Russian/Slavic linguistics. Or I may enroll in a translating/interpreting certificate program... still not sure yet what next year will entail!" (fall 2009).

During the second semester I took a class devoted to putting on a performance of a cut-down version of Gogol's "Revizor" in Russian. We had an experienced Russian theater director, Gariy Chernyakhovsky, to help us out for a couple of months, and the final result was a successful little show. I played the role of Khlestakov, the young down-and-outer who deceives all the important citizens in town into to offering him bribes and their daughters' hands in marriage. I enjoyed working on my part and on the staging to a somewhat greater degree than I enjoyed my other classes, though almost all of them were excellent" (updated fall 2008).

"I think the last time I saw you was perhaps after my first year in Kazakhstan? I spent a total of three years in Kazakhstan, the first in Karaganda and the last two in Kokshetau. Then I moved to Wheaton, Illinois for grad school in Biblical Exegesis (where I was pleasantly surprised that Russian grammar gave me a head start on Greek grammar). Even more surprising was the number of Russian spekaers I became connected with in the area. I found out about a small Russian congregation at a local American church, and began attending there as a way to ease back into life in the US. A year later (2005), a number of Meskhetian Turkish refugees moved into our area from Russia. I became good friends (and a ready resource) for them, and continue to spend lots of time with them.
A little over a year ago, I married Vadim Romanovich, the son of one of the Russian-speaking couples in the Russian fellowship I had been attending. He is originally from Latvia and I have enjoyed being a part of his family and culture. So, I do keep up with my Russian, though still with many mistakes" (updated, fall 2008).

For once, I am actually in the country -- but I am expecting to deliver a child on October 29th and my doctor would not be happy if I travelled that far.
Here's a story about how you never know how useful your Russian studies might become in the future. My husband and I began a job in Burundi, Central Africa this past summer. We're working with a Christian development organization called Mennonite Central Committee. We support local organizations in peace-building, reconciliation and income-generation work, following the 14-year civil war in Burundi, and genocide in neighboring Rwanda. When we started, I was already 5 months pregnant and one challenge was to find a decent gynecologist in a country with a crumbled infrastructure and poor health care facilities. Some expats pointed me to Dr. Mamunov...
And it turns out he is Russian. He also speaks French (the lingua franca in Burundi), but no English. Since I was just barely beginning my study of French, I decided it would be better to try my rusty Russian with him. It took a half hour mental warm-up before I got to his office for the first consultation. And it was still a pretty funny interview. Somehow, I never learned certain vocabulary phrases in my Russian courses at W&M like "edema" or "date of your last period". So we had to stumble through a few misunderstandings. But we did manage to communicate, and he even explained to me what we were looking at on the sonogram. Since then, I've found a Russian hardware store owner, and Russian has been more helpful than French with him too!" (fall 2008).
