Dean Strikwerda announces new Dean for Educational Policy

Carl Strikwerda, Dean of the Faculty in Arts and Sciences at William & Mary, sent the following e-mail to A&S faculty and staff regarding the appointment of Teresa Longo, Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, to Dean for Educational Policy. -Ed

Dear Arts & Sciences Colleagues:

I am very pleased to announce that Teresa Longo, Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, will become the new Dean for Educational Policy for Arts &Sciences.  Because Prof. Longo has a research leave for the fall of 2009, she will assume her position in January, 2010. Prof. Silvia Tandeciarz, Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, will serve as Interim Dean for Educational Policy during the fall semester, 2009.  Prof. Tandeciarz is a former Associate Chair and Acting Chair of Modern Languages and Literatures.  She also holds the Class of 2011 Professorship.

Prof. Longo received a B.A. and M.A. in Spanish from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has taught at William and Mary since 1989 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1995.  She is the winner of an Alumni Fellowship Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award.  She was named Virginia Professor of the Year in 1996 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Between 1996 and 1999, she held a Chair for Excellence in Teaching at William and Mary.  Besides William and Mary grants, she has won a fellowship at Brown University from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition to numerous articles, she has published a book, Pablo Neruda and the U.S. Culture Industry (Routledge, 2002).  She has served on many Arts & Sciences and College committees, as well as serving as Hispanic Studies Section Coordinator, Associate Chair, and Interim Chair of Modern Languages and Literatures.
