Stephanie Demaree ('09) wins Espadas Prize
| April 15, 2009
Stephanie's project on "Macondo versus McOndo: realismo mágico y el
peso de la memoria histórica en The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao"
began as a paper in the senior research seminar. Her paper evolved into
a stellar presentation that was then given at the 30th annual MACLAS
conference held at The College of William and Mary. The Espadas Prize
is given annually to the best undergraduate essay presented at the
MACLAS conference. According to Barbara Tenenbaum of the Library of
Congress, chair of the prize committee, the decision was unanimous.
Other members included Joan Marx of Muhlenberg College and editor of
MACLAS Latin American Essays, and Consuelo Hernández of American
University. Photographed with Stephanie Demaree (right) is Hispanic
Studies Professor Regina Root.
