Placement

Incoming students who have previously studied Japanese or are heritage learners and wish to continue studying Japanese at William and Mary must take an assessment test given before the start of classes in the fall semester in order to determine the appropriate language level. Mid-year transfer students who wish to continue language study in the spring semester should contact [[akitamura,  Aiko Kitamura]].

Assessment Tests are available online for students with William & Mary accounts. Students can log in to Blackboard and search for "Assessment Test" at the bottom left search box on the main Blackboard page to locate the correct test.  It is also strongly recommended that, upon completion of the on-line Assessment Test, students schedule an in-person interview with Ms. Kitamura.

Students who have already registered for Japanese language classes above the 101 level can continue to hold a seat in that class, but may be moved to a more appropriate level based on the exam results.

Currently, William & Mary has not evaluated either the SAT II or AP Exam for Japanese. If you have already taken a standardized exam and you wish to continue with Japanese, you should take the on-line placement exam to ensure proper placement.

Please contact [[akitamura, Professor Aiko Kitamura]]  for more information, or see the Modern Languages and Literatures Department's Placement Policy.
