Teaching Opportunities in Hispanic Studies

Teaching Assistants

Every spring semester the Hispanic Studies section announces an information session to recruit teaching assistants for the following fall semester; the initial training and selection of four or five TAs takes place on the Monday prior to the beginning of classes in August. In Hispanic Studies 101 in the fall semester and 102 in the spring, students meet with a faculty member on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and with a TA on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (HS 101 and 102 are offered in summers, but there are no TA positions available).

Teacher Certification

To become a certified teacher in Virginia with an endorsement in Spanish, a student must complete a major in Hispanic Studies and must also gain admission to the School of Education. Students must have at least 54 credit hours (junior status) at William and Mary by the time they start taking education classes in order to be admitted to the School of Education. Students are expected to complete the pre-service program in three semesters; Hispanic Studies majors who plan to study abroad during their junior year need to plan the appropriate sequence of courses in careful consultation with advisors in the School of Education and in Hispanic Studies.
