German Studies Alum Elena Tsiaperas, Class of 2005, wanted to make a difference, so she decided to join Teaching for America. She currently teaches ESL at one of the under-resourced schools in one of the poorest parts of New York City. "I am teaching English as a Second Language, so most of my students are actually Hispanic, but the concept of inequity still applies," Elena writes. "I am one of the few people I know who actually loves the job. The most difficulty I am having is with curriculum - I basically have free reign, which can be overwhelming. How do you break down the English language into teachable parts?" Elena wrote an outstanding Honors Thesis on The Turkish-German Literature of Kanak-Sprach, for which she received highest honors.
